The Project
The emergency shelter in Thalwil is a two-story prefabricated structure built using timber construction methods. The building, which is 28 meters long and 7.5 meters wide, can accommodate approximately 40 people. Access is provided via an external steel-framed pergola. The project was planned and implemented in a very short time. Planning took place from mid-2023 to mid-2024, and the building was completed in May 2025 after an eight-month construction period and was ready for occupancy.
The Construction Method
The structural elements are very slim. The ceilings consist of 120 mm CLT panels, and the floor structure is 130 mm thick (250 mm total). The apartment partition walls feature staggered 120 mm studs and double sheathing on both sides. (Wall thicknesses: 180–190 mm).
The Challenge
Despite the very slim structures, numerous requirements regarding fire and sound insulation had to be met.
